Helping in the community kitchen (Langar Sewa) also took away most of the remaining time, which left Babaji hardly any time to mix with anyone or talk to anyone. All this work was done in silence, which made everyone tease Babaji for not speaking at all and called him Moni Singh. At the age of 14-15 Babaji took permission from his Bade Babaji to take vow to stop speaking (Maun Vrat) which was granted. This silence paved the way further towards God.
Babaji’s elder brother, Bhai Thakur Singhji, who was a married man, used to recite Rehraas Saheb Paath (evening prayer after sunset) in the Sachkhand Gurudwara but after his sudden death, their father, Kishan Singhji could not bear the sorrow. Their father, preferring not to disturb the studies of the two younger brothers, asked Babaji to recite Rehraas at Sachkhand since he would not be interested in any other worldly duties. Babaji promptly agreed, but on one condition, that he would not accept any salary for it. The manager was very pleased with Babaji for this noble gesture and immediately developed tremendous respect for him.
Getting the blessing of his teacher, Bade Babaji, who reiterated to him the value of selfless and devotional service to God, Babaji was all set to dedicate himself, heart and soul, with undivided attention to achieve his goal of merging himself with Lord Supreme. It used to take him one and half hours to complete Rehraas Saheb and people would be completely absorbed while listening to his recitation. Everyone felt that Babaji was talking to God. The Sangat would be spellbound and relished the bliss and happiness which flowed from such a heartfelt prayer. People simply flocked to get attuned to such concentration and ran to touch his feet. But Bade Babaji wisely became sterner day by day, as his name spread like wildfire and vigilantly took care of every minute of his activity plus continued to test him from time to time. Bade Babaji said that Lord always assigns a secret army for his sacred souls, and progressively instilled in him the discipline to learn the different Shabads to perfection. He likened them to precious arrows which have to be stored in a quiver and made use of at appropriate times.
Babaji did small Sewa (Chhoti Sewa) i.e. as Mit Granthi for 10 years and after that on 1st May 1960, he was assigned the highest Sewa which was for the first time in the history of Sachkhand, Hazur Saheb assigned to a local resident.
